Sunset views from Kota Kinabalu City as some locals would say–is best viewed in the famous two kilometer stretch of Tanjung Aru Beach. While the dark-yellow-hued sunset was certainly breathtaking, the area with the best view of the sunset was more than overcrowded. Looking at the bright side, it makes for a perfect spot to just look at the throngs of tourists enjoy themselves while on vacation.
Located at around 15 minutes from the city center, a visit to Tanjung Aru will set you back around 30 ringgits back and forth. And, with the advent sunset, everyone started to pack the crowded shoreline to get that perfect shot. With groups of women taking that perfect jump shot to oblivious kids looking for crabs and to the countless more setting up their gear for the best timelapse, it reminded me of the scene when we visited Kuta Beach in Bali. While Tanjung Aru certainly is just that–a sunset spot–Kuta Beach is at least fully developed to cater to all possible water activities that you could possibly think.
Now, if you’re one that finds solace in watching the sun as it sets, Tanjung Aru is not the best place for you. According to our Grab driver who drove us around the day before–the best places for a view of Kota Kinabalu’s sunset is Kokol Haven and Tanjung Lipat. Nevertheless, make sure to make the most out of your visit.
